After realizing that something digital isn’t related to the time it was made and with what technology but instead the amount of states it has, we can look back on different objects in history and realize things aren’t what they seem! Jacquard’s Loom, although it is made in 1804, this object is completely digital due the components that make it work having two states. The machine read punch card like objects in order to determine if certain parts of the machine were to be lifted up and down in order to make a design. The two states of being up and down means it is a digital invention! For an analog object, something as recent as a radio station in a car is analog due to the tuning of the radio being able to go in between frequencies to even the tiniest amount makes this relatively recent invention analog! Another digital piece goes back to even 3400 BC with cuneiform, the earliest writing system in history! Because it had a finite amount of characters, it is considered digital. For another analog, we can look at cans with strings attached to them. Due to the strings using vibrations to replicate the infinite amount of different frequencies of sound, this is analog. It’s pretty interesting to think about different objects throughout history and actually think about whether or not they have a determined amount of states, try it for yourself!
