9 x 11 grid

Step 1: Grid Prep

Before deciding of what you want to do, make a grid that you can place your design on. This will make it much easier to read and understand what you should be doing when you are actually weaving. You will need a bigger grid and warp if you want to have a more intricate design. Mine is simple, so I stuck with a small 9 x 11 grid.

Step 2: Designing

Now that you have your grid, start to create your design. Depending on what colors you use, you might want to fill in the squares with what color you want there if it makes it easier to understand. I am going with a simple white for my weave. If you are also doing white, make sure to have a black warp so your design pops better!

Step 3: Weaving

Now that you have your design ready, you get to start weaving. Now, with the grid that we made will come in handy. Every square that has a color in it will indicate what we should do with our tools. As indicated by the legend above, the colored boxed mean we take our needle and go over a warp thread, and the empty boxed means we go under the warp thread. For instance, when looking at the second row from left to right, we would have to do under, three over, three under, then two over to finish the line. The for the row below it we would have to start from right to left. I labelled the boxes with U (under) and O (over) to make sure what I am doing is right. You may not need to do this, but if it helps there’s no harm in taking an extra minute to label your boxes with something like this. Do thisĀ  for every line, and you’ll have yourself a personalized weave with your initials!
